Allergies - Nine Tips To Keep Your Bedroom Allergy Free

For most of us, the bedroom is a place of refuge - our sanctuary. It is one of the places where we spend most of our time. However, if you are bothered by allergy attacks all year long, it might be time to perform some allergy busting actions.

One of the most common allergens present in our homes is the lowly dust mite. Dust mites are microscopic insects, which thrive mostly in dusty, humid environments and can be found lurking in almost all areas in our homes. Beware when you happen to inhale the air speckled with the feces and remains of these tiny insects since it may trigger just another allergy attack!

Avoid the triggers. Get rid of dust mites, especially in your bedroom, by following these simple suggestions:

1. Protect your pillows and mattresses. The fibrous materials in your pillows and mattresses can be a haven for these microscopic dust mites. It is therefore wise to cover them with airtight plastic or vinyl cases or special covers to prevent these micro-organisms from gaining access to your bedtime companions. It might require some investment but it will be well worth it.

2. Choose your beddings well. If you are an allergy sufferer, stay away from down, kapok and feather comforters and pillows. These contain materials that can irritate your respiratory tract and bring on another allergy attack. Go for polyester or dacron pillows instead. And don't forget to encase them in an airtight and dust-proof cover for added protection.

3. Observe proper bed hygiene. It is advisable to wash your sheets in hot water every week, your mattress pads and synthetic blankets every two weeks and your pillows every month. This will keep the dust mites away!

4. To clean or not to clean. Keeping a room clean can either prevent or bring on an allergy attack. Why is this so? While cleaning can eliminate dust from accumulating, the activities involved in the process such as mopping and sweeping the floor can undoubtedly raise dust. So what do you do? Experts agree that cleaning should be limited to about once every week using the aid of a vacuum cleaner and a damp cloth. Whenever necessary, you can spot dust with a damp cloth more often to prevent dust from accumulating. Just don't forget to wear a face mask while you're at it.

5. Hot water please. A special word of advice - always use hot water for cleaning purposes. Using cold water can be a very welcome treat to the dust mite!

6. No to carpets. Using a carpet in the bedroom is a definite no-no. Carpets are an excellent nesting ground for dust mites so it is better to opt instead for bare floors.

7. In with the curtains, out with the Venetians. Venetian blinds trap dust so go for washable curtains instead. However, if this is not possible at the moment, include the vacuuming or cleaning of your Venetian blinds to your weekly tasks.

8. Minimize clutter. As much as possible, do away with dust catchers. The bedroom is not a storage area so out-of-season clothing or bedding have no place in an allergy-proof bedroom. If this cannot be avoided, wrap items tightly in plastic garbage bags prior to storage.

9. Enlist the help of your appliances. Run an air conditioner or dehumidifier during hot season (especially spring and fall) to keep the humidity level low. Dust mites thrive in areas where humidity is high so strive to maintain the humidity level under 40% but above 25%. If you have an air purifier, use it to keep your room dust free.
